🚦 What is a prompt - and why is it so important?

Imagine having a personal assistant that can do everything for you - but only if you say exactly what you want. Welcome to the world of artificial intelligence.

A prompt is nothing more than the instruction you give the AI.
A good prompt is like a clear order. A bad prompt is like: "Do something."

Why this is important?

Bad prompt = unclear answer
Good prompt = exactly what you need - in the right language, in the right style, in the right format.

The AI is not magical. It reacts to what you give it. Garbage in, garbage out.
But: If you know how to ask, you'll get answers that are better than any Google search.

In short:

A prompt is your lever.
The better you use it, the more precise, more creative and more useful the AI is for you.

🧩 Building a strong prompt - in 4 steps

Most people just start writing: "Write me a text about marketing."
And then wonder why the output sounds boring or doesn't fit.

A good prompt works differently. It has structure.
With these 4 building blocks, you can get the best out of every AI:

🔹 1. Define the role - who is actually speaking here?

Give the AI an identity or perspective.

✅ "You're a creative copywriter for startups."
✅ "You're a fitness trainer with a focus on home workouts."
✅ "You're an experienced Python programmer."

🎯 Why? So the AI knows what tone it should strike and what knowledge it should use.

🔹 2. Define the goal - What do you want the AI to do?

Specify what you want.

✅ "Write an introduction for a blog article."
✅ "Explain a complex topic to me in simple terms."
✅ "Create a table with pros and cons."

🎯 Tip: Imagine you're giving a freelancer a job. Say exactly what you want - not just "do it".

🔹 3. Give context - for whom, what's it about, what's important?

The more context, the better the output.

✅ "The text is for young people who are interested in AI."
✅ "The target group has no prior knowledge."
✅ "Use casual, motivating language."

🎯 Bonus: Mention restrictions or wishes (max. 100 words, no technical jargon, in the style of Apple marketing, etc.)

🎯 Make sure to include a few words about the topic.)

🔹 4. Specify format - What should the answer look like?

Say whether you want text, list, table, code, social post or email.

✅ "Answer as a table with 3 columns."
✅ "Write an Instagram post with emojis and hashtags."
✅ "Deliver the text as a Markdown blog article."

🎯 Why? Without a format hint, you often end up with endless continuous text.

In short:

Role + task + context + format = your super prompt.

You can find out in detail how much influence the right role assignment actually has (and how you can even build personalised AI assistants from it) in the article Role assignment in ChatGPT prompts.

🧠 System Prompt vs. User Prompt - How they play together perfectly

Many people only know the user prompt - i.e. what you type in directly.
But the system prompt is the secret hero in the background.

What is a system prompt?

Quote

An invisible basic rule that tells the AI how it should generally think, respond or behave.

You use it to determine:

  • Which role the AI has permanently (e.g. teacher, developer, coach)

. teacher, developer, coach)

  • What values, tone or rules it should observe
  • How it should deal with ambiguities or boundaries

📌 Example:

Quote

"You are an empathetic voice AI that responds clearly, comprehensibly and professionally. You explain things in a way that even beginners understand."

What is a user prompt?

Quote

This is your actual task or question, e.g.:
"Make me a list of 5 tips for better sleep."

The AI now uses the rules from the System Prompt to answer your user query more appropriately.

Why are both important?

  • The System Prompt ensures consistency and the "character" of the AI.
  • The User Prompt provides the concrete task.

➡️ Together they are like stage directions + actor's text.

📘 Example in action:

  • System prompt:
"You are a motivational coach who coaches in casual language and ends every answer with a positive impulse."
  • User prompt:
"Give me tips on how to be more productive in my home office."
  • KI response:
"Sure! Start with fixed time slots, plan your day like a meeting - and give yourself real breaks. You can do it! 💪"

Merksatz:

System Prompt = Personality & Game Rules
User Prompt = Task & Goal
Both together make AI technology a real help.

✅The 5 rules for better prompts

Do you want clear, helpful and creative AI responses? Then follow these 5 simple rules - whether for texts, chatbots, marketing or code.

🔹 1. Be specific - not vague.

❌ *"Write me something about social media."
✅ "Create 3 Instagram posts for a gym with a focus on motivation and community."

The more precise your task, the better the result.

🔹 2. Give AI a role.

❌ "What's the best way to learn?"
✅ "You're a learning coach. Explain to me how I can learn more effectively as a visual learner."

Roles create focus and style.

🔹 3. Say what you want - and what you don't want.

✅ "Keep it short. Max. 100 words. No technical jargon. Target group: students."

Limitations help the AI to get to the point.

🔹 4. Use examples or structures.

✅ "Format as a table: problem, solution, example."
✅ "Here is an example text. Write in a similar style."

The AI loves clarity - and you get exactly what you need.

🔹 5. Test, refine, improve.

Prompting is a creative process. You get better with time - and so does the AI.
Use A/B tests: Two slightly different prompts, two results - compare which is better.

Conclusion:

Good prompts are not longer - but clearer, more structured and more targeted.

🚀 Power tips for advanced writers

If you already know how to write good prompts, here's your next level: techniques that deliver pro results.

🔹 1. Chain-of-thought

Quote

Tell the AI: "Explain your thought process step by step."

✅Example:
"Solve the maths problem 27 × 46. Explain each calculation step individually."

📈 Advantage: You don't get "magic solutions", but comprehensible steps - perfect for maths, logic, planning or complex decisions.

🔹 2. Few-shot prompting (working with examples)

Quote

Show the AI what you want the answer to be.

✅Example:
"Here's an example:
Question: How is glass recycled?
Answer: Glass is collected, sorted, melted down and remoulded.
Please do the same for: 'How is plastic recycled?'"

📈 Advantage: You bring the AI into line with your way of thinking - great for format, style or tone specifications.

🔹 3. Constraints (setting limits)

Quote

Define rules: Length, style, what is forbidden.

✅ Example:
"Write max. 120 words, no jargon, no bulleted lists."

📈 Advantage: You get more precise, to the point answers.

🔹 4. Use prompt templates & role libraries

Create your own templates for recurring tasks.

📌 Example template:

Quote

"You are a {role}. Create a {type} for {target group} in the style of {marker/style}. Max {word-count}."

➡️ Quickly customisable - saves time and delivers consistent quality.

🔹 5. iterative prompting (fine-tuning)

Quote

It's better to make 2-3 small corrections than 1 huge prompt.

🎯 Example process:

  1. Get first version with feedback
  2. Sharpen style or content
  3. Save/use optimal answer

📈 Advantage: You get to the optimal result step by step - just like in a real conversation.

Conclusion:

These techniques turn "okay answers" into really good ones - especially for complex tasks or demanding target groups.

I show you in detail how to build prompts with which the AI generates exciting stories and creative plots in the article Interactive storytelling with AI.
